Preparing for potential disaster is standard training for pilots, yet as finance professionals it’s not often something we study.
Consider how your business would respond if it was hit with an unforeseen crisis. Could you cope with the incident, but more importantly do you have a plan to return your business to BAU as quickly as possible? Usually without a pre-determined budget.
It is well documented that 50% of the largest global companies suffered declines in share price value greater than 20% in a 1 month period after the 9/11 disaster. Over ½ of this group took 2+ years to recover to their previous share price level with some never returning at all. The companies with well-developed crisis plans recovered quicker and maintained higher levels of employee engagement and customer loyalty. Very similar insights were gained after the Earthquakes in Christchurch and Wellington.
How do you know you're making good decisions in the midst of chaos?
