For share investors, capital gains tax is an ever present issue. From simple transactions where shares are bought and sold through to the complex calculations that can arise where a company offers bonus shares, rights issues or share options, it is essential for advisers to fully understand the potential CGT impact on their clients.
This webinar will consider all the CGT issues around share transactions, including a consideration as to when share investing becomes share trading, with the very different tax consequences that can follow.
This webinar is framed to reflect real life client situations and issues that you might encounter on a daily basis, as well as some of the more complex and unusual outcomes that can arise.
During the webinar, you will be guided through the following topics, aided by practical worked examples and references to key recent case law:
• The basic rules; capital gains and losses
• Shareholding as an investor or share trading as a business: where is the dividing line and what’s the different tax treatment?
• Identifying when shares are acquired
• Disposing of shares
• Receiving bonus shares
• Takeovers and mergers; scrip for scrip rollover
• Share buy-backs
• Rights and options to acquire shares
Webinar Learning Outcomes:
Participants will gain an understanding of how the CGT rules apply to various share transactions, both in theory and when applied to common client situations. The knowledge gained can then be taken back to the office to be applied to your present and future clients.
The webinar provides an introductory and intermediate level of knowledge ideal for the development of staff within tax agent and accounting practices who act for individual clients with share portfolios. The webinar is also ideal for other professionals requiring an overview of the tax rules around CGT and shares, such as financial planners, stockbrokers and bankers.
