It is sometimes said that claiming tax deductions is Australia’s true national sport. This webinar, the second in our back to basic series looking at the fundamentals of Australian tax, explores the concept of “deductions“. We look at what a deductible expense actually is and how the law defines what is deductible and what isn’t. We look at the tax treatment of the different type of expenses that can be incurred by individuals in employment, investors and businesses, as well as some of the other, lesser known, types of deductible costs. We also consider what can happen when the deductions claimed by a taxpayer exceed the income that gave rise to those deductions.
Using practical examples, case studies and clear concise language we will highlight the different types of deductions that can be claimed by individual and business taxpayers. Amongst the topics to be covered:
• Overview of the law governing deductions
• General deductions and specific deductions
• Deductions for individuals, including work-related expenses
• Deductions for businesses
• Investment deductions, including rental property expenses
• Substantiating deductions
• Creating a loss
• Prepayment rules
Webinar Learning Outcomes:
Attendees will gain an understanding of the basic tax rules that underpin this most crucial of tax concepts and will be able to apply those rules with clients who have taxation issues related to deductions on a day to day basis.
