Developing your Skills to Deal with Difficult People

Overview
Boost your skill set so you can better adapt and respond to difficult people without losing your cool, sleep or sanity!
Every professional will encounter difficult people at some time. The difficult person could be in our team, our Manager, or it could be a customer, a client, or a strategic partner. As much as we may wish – we cannot change difficult people.
Therefore, our best approach is to develop the skills to manage ourselves well, and achieve the outcomes we seek even when dealing with a difficult person. In this session, we focus on how to develop three key skills that will help you to work with difficult people more successfully:
- Cutting through your dislike and judgment
- Staying focussed on the goal or outcome you seek in conversations, rather than the drama/ distractions/ challenges that difficult people can create
- Building your stamina to manage difficult people well – to the expected standard of performance
Learning Outcomes:
Participants can expect to learn:
- How we sometimes, inadvertently contribute to the negative behaviour patterns that difficult people can create, and how to remove ourselves from that dynamic
- How to identify what direction to take in conversations to keep the conversation on track, or rescue it if it is in decline
- The ways that our judgements, and dislike for a negative person can rob us of our peace and sanity, and also ‘play into their hands’ – making the situation more difficult.
- How to set ourselves up for success when dealing with difficult people, and stay focussed on the goals rather than distractions
- How to release tensions and difficult emotions that being around difficult people can create
