ESG Issue in Focus – Greenwashing

Overview
A discussion of best practice strategies and key trends in relation to Greenwashing
The increasing focus on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) considerations stands as a major shift in how companies and investors interact. Issues once seen as irrelevant to the performance of companies are now being brought to the forefront. In a recent speech ASIC Chair Joe Longo stated, “it’s clear that ESG issues are driving the biggest changes to financial reporting and disclosure standards in a generation”.
At the head of this change is Greenwashing. There is no legal definition of the term Greenwashing. Traditionally Greenwashing is where an entity presents false or misleading claims about its environmental sustainability.
