Ethics for the AI-powered Lawyer

Overview
Discover how timeless legal ethics shape cutting-edge tech—essential for today’s lawyers!
Generative AI has been around for nearly two years now. We’ve begun to see some very useful real life applications in legal research and practice management tools, but we remain concerned about its flaws and limitations. It can produce results that are skewed by the data it’s trained on (biases), it can throw in un-nuanced or inaccurate content that might be hard to detect and its output is sometimes wrong or confabulated.
For all the benefits, there are extra risks for lawyers to consider. Our biggest concern is to ensure that our use of AI meets the standards for legal services – that we abide by our ethical duties to our clients in providing competent, appropriately priced services whilst maintaining our client’s confidentiality, and that we don’t breach intellectual property rights. We don’t just need the tech skills, we need to practice safely, competently and ethically.
In this session we will cover:
- A recap on how AI works, and how that affects its results – good and bad!
- How AI is being deployed in legal services
- Responses of courts and regulators
- How the rules of Ethics apply to the use of AI

The session will feature case studies and examples, and give you many practical tips to guide you in your use of this revolutionary technology.
