Governance - The Power of Measurement to Embed Modern Governance

Overview

Continuous measurement enables continuous improvement

There are many opportunities to understand the ‘theory’ of corporate governance but by developing an understanding of how to measure against the ‘7 Pillars of Modern Governance’ used in the GovernRight framework, your organisation has a systematic method to practically guide the governance journey.

This final session of the series considers the 15 best practice outcomes and how to measure your progress on the path to Modern Governance, against these outcomes. This will allow you to identify specific areas of improvement needed, as you work through a logical framework on how to embed theory into practice.

We’ll take a deep dive into:

•    Pillar 6 – a Culture of Accountability and Engagement and

•    Pillar 7 – Continuous Improvement

The session will conclude with a detailed discussion of reporting against outcomes, not activity and help your organisation attain perhaps the most important outcome – a clear, effective and aligned reporting framework, at all levels, supporting efficient and effective oversight.

Simon will review what he looks for when he assesses an organisation’s governance and reporting framework to track its progress to meet the challenges of Modern Governance and discuss how to use the organisation’s actual governance data to drive the Board agenda to:

•    encourage true oversight by the Board – engaging its involvement when an issue requires Board discussion on a matter of resource deployment and

•    allow the management team to manage the daily operations of the organisation.

Improving the governance and reporting process encourages greater engagement between Board and management, optimisation of directors’ time and better outcomes for stakeholders.

Topics in this series will explore how to implement each section of ‘The Modern Board Pack’:

Learning Outcomes:

  • to ensure that there is a culture of continual improvement leading to the most efficient use of resources
  • to facilitate a clear effective and aligned reporting framework, supporting an efficient and effective oversight
  • how to build a culture of continuous improvement, both in the full board and in the personal contribution of the Directors.
