Insurance inside a SMSF: What Trustees need to consider

Overview

Important considerations beyond basic compliance obligations when holding insurance inside a SMSF.

The superannuation rules impose an obligation on SMSF trustees to “consider the need” for insurance for the members of their fund.  Before trustee decisions can be made, a number of important issues need to be covered off, including tax outcomes, alternative ownership / structuring options and the real purpose of insurance cover inside super.

This webinar goes well beyond the compliance regime to look at the real issues that SMSF trustees need to think about, including:

•    Structuring insurance within a SMSF, including the ATOs updated position

•    The tax issues relevant for holding insurance within a SMSF

•    Relevant client strategies using various types of insurance

•    What the SIS rules actually require for insurances inside a SMSF

Learning Outcomes:

•    Understand the SIS requirements for insurances held within SMSFs

•    Understand the taxation outcomes on insurance payments from Superannuation

•    Identify relevant and effective insurance structuring inside Superannuation funds

•    Identify client scenarios where insurance cover is inefficient or problematic

Suited to:

SMSF Accountants, SMSF Advisors and Financial Planners.
