Investing SMSF Money Overseas and Exotic Assets - What's the Catch?

Overview

Better investment opportunities overseas and exotic assets for SMSFs may not be a pot of gold

For some SMSF trustees investment in alternative assets may seem a better option when local and traditional investment are doing poorly. However, investing overseas may not be the answer to better returns.  Overseas legislation may put hurdles in front of an SMSF and when combined with the superannuation legislation the investment may not be possible.

Another alternative could be an SMSF investing in exotic investments such as artworks and collectables.  While this can be successful, there are a number of frustrating issues which arise because of the restrictions placed on storage, valuation and insurance of the investment.

This session will provide you with some practical case studies that illustrate the issues involved by an SMSF investing overseas and how the investment is restricted by the laws of the foreign country.  Also, it will examine the rules for exotic investments and issues created under the SIS Act and Regulations
