Professional Ethics Case Studies for Tax Advisers and Lawyers

Overview

Be challenged with this interactive session as you navigate complex scenarios, sharpen your judgment, and apply ethical principles with confidence. Perfect for practitioners at every level who want practical insights they can use immediately.

This session will use a series of case studies outlining common ethically challenging situations that are encountered in practice and explore the sorts of strategies that may be deployed to better deal with such situations in practice, within the professional body, regulatory and legislative requirements by which tax advisers are variously governed.

Using a progressive build-up of facts over time, these case studies will include:

  • Common conflicts of interest that may arise between two/more clients – when relationships dissolve with a common adviser
  • Common conflicts of interest that may arise between clients and advisers – when interests diverge
  • Confidential information issues (both disclosures and withholding disclosure) – when can you not disclose, when must you and when/how can you disclose?
  • Personal relationship vs professional obligations – can you manage the difference?
  • Gifts and independence – how much is too much?
  • Dealing with pressure [from clients] to act in certain ways to ‘help’ the client in their situation – the ‘slippery-slope’

NOTE: This is the second part in a two-part series, with the first session considering the theory of professional ethics and the regulatory requirements for tax advisers – Professional Ethics Theory & Regulatory Framework for Tax Advisers and Lawyers
