Creating a Constructive Culture in a Defensive World

Overview

Sustained high performance thrives on a growth and achievement-oriented culture, but many teams remain self-oriented, problem-focused, and defensive.

This session examines what is at the heart of how your team works together and with you. Do your team come to you with problems (not solutions), is there bickering, in-fighting and defensiveness between them? Or maybe the environment is nice enough but feels flat, dull or lacking in energy.

Many of these behaviours are symptomatic of defensiveness in teams that are hugely damaging to performance and engagement.

In this session, we explore what is going on in these teams and how to create shifts so the environment can become increasingly constructive

The content explores best practices and proven techniques for;

  1. Understanding clearly whether individuals and teams are constructive and powerful, or defensive and powerless. How to identify and understand defensive behaviours when you experience them
  2. How to manage yourself in the face of individuals and teams who are oriented toward blame, justification, competition or just doing nothing!
  3. Proven, simple techniques for shifting the culture toward being constructive, energised and powerful (power with) both at a team and individual level

Beyond the basics, the content looks at creating and cultivating behaviours that are highly constructive and can be evolved in the future as needed.

  • You will learn simple, practical ways to establish a common ground with others on the key standards across important matters like dependability, responsibility, and collaboration
  • You will learn how to surface issues that are holding a team in a negative or defensive space and how to shift the dynamic and focus forward
  • You will learn how to build and manage the emotional safety of your Leadership
  • This session will be interactive. It includes case studies and further reading references
